“Born Free”. Many of Joy’s paintings still decorate the house . Lodge: Lake Naivasha Country Club. BLD

Day 5 - 6    Today we head for Tsavo West National Park and the famous Finch Hattons camp. Finch Hattons lies at the heart of Tsavo West National park, part of Kenya’s single largest game reserve, well known for the “Big Five” The camp surrounds a natural freshwater spring, flowing through three crystal clear pools, with tents along the water’s edge. It is unfenced and wild. In the evenings you are escorted to and from your accommodation.

The springs are home to a resident pod of hippopotamus, which spend their days wallowing in the ponds and their nights grazing around the camp. Bird life at Finch Hattons is also spectacular with over 200 locally recorded species.

Against this magnificent backdrop roam vast herds of elephant accompanied by a kaleidoscope of other fabulous beasts - lion, buffalo, cheetah, giraffe, baboon, gazelle, hippo and wildebeest to name but a few. There are also over 400 species of birds, all manner of reptiles, flora and fauna and some of the most soul-searing views in Africa. We stay in comfort today at the splendid Serena Amboseli Lodge. Day 9          Today we drive up the cloud forests on the edge of Ngorongoro Crater. Often referred to as the “Garden of Eden”, the Crater has one of the highest concentrations of animals in Africa, with the exception of the giraffe and gorilla. This is the largest non-flooded volcano crater in the world. Ngorongoro Wildlife Lodge is perched on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater at 7,500 feet above sea level (with a 2,000 feet sheer drop down to the crater floor). Often described as the world’s eighth wonder, Ngorongoro offers the opportunity of viewing an amazing variety of wild animal life in a concentrated area with its unforgettable blue-tinted slopes, swampy grasslands, lakes, rivers, woodlands and hills. Some 30,000 animals inhabit the crater. Lodge: Ngorongoro Wildlife Lodge. BLD

Day 10       This morning we descend into the crater for a game drive and in the afternoon we will proceed down the other edge of the crater and into the Serengeti National Park. Serengeti is a Masai word meaning “Endless Plains” and together with the Masai Mara has one of the largest mammal migrations in the world. Seronera Wildlife Lodge is situated in the heart of the Serengeti, world famous for its large amount of grazing mammals, including 1.5 million wildebeest. The lodge has been built and integrated into a group of Kopjes on the wildebeest migratory route, which occurs twice annually.

Day 11       Today we move toward Lobo Wildlife Lodge, game driving en-route, this area offers an opportunity of witnessing the great migration. Lobo Wildlife Lodge is situated over the Serengeti Plains and has been constructed on a rocky outcrop with the swimming pool having been built on a rock deck. The viewing deck and pool overlook the wide open plains and a water hole - which encourages a variety of visitors during the day and night. At night the water hole is lit, attracting interesting nocturnal animals and leopard, lion, cheetah and hyena are often seen in close proximity. Wildebeest move through the northern woodlands in most years from June - December to feed on the longer grasses that persist in this area.
